Mayi Ya Congo: Water for Congo

Small actions can have a ripple effect.

On our recent mission trip to Kinshasa, the joy of the children at Theresa’s House was unforgettable. They gathered around as gifts were handed out—laughing, clapping, and tearing into the wrapping with pure excitement. One little boy, Angel, was so eager he used his teeth to open his gift, not wanting to miss a moment. Their joy reminded us why we go, why we give, and why we return.

But alongside that joy was a sobering reality.

For seven days, Theresa’s House had no running water. With 30 children and 7 adults in the home, every day became a challenge. Water had to be purchased daily just to drink and cook. Showers were impossible. Every drop had to be conserved. Kinshasa’s aging water system—built for far fewer people—can no longer keep up with a population now estimated at nearly 18 million. When major pipes break, entire neighborhoods lose access to water.

Water sustains life. And without it, everything becomes harder.

That’s why we are launching Mayi Ya Congo (Water for Congo)—a project to build a dedicated potable water reservoir on the Theresa’s House compound. This reservoir will provide reliable, clean drinking water for the children, protect them during citywide water shutdowns, and allow us to share water with the surrounding community. The total cost for this life-saving system is approximately $25,000.

Scripture reminds us that even the smallest gifts matter:

“She out of her poverty put in all she had.” (Luke 21:4)

If you have pennies, bring them all. What feels small on its own can become life-sustaining when given together.

Please consider donating toward this goal. Your generosity will help ensure that the laughter, hope, and dignity of the children at Theresa’s House continue—sustained by something as essential as clean water.

Thank you for standing with us. Thank you for giving. And thank you for helping us bring mayi (water) to those who need it most.

Fingers holding a heart
